Wildlife Information

Forests of India

The 'jungles' of India are ancient in nature and composition. They are rich in variety and shelter a wide range of avifauna and mammals and insects. The fact that they have existed for very long time is proved from the ancient texts all of which have some mention of the forests. The people revered forests and a large number of religious ceremonies centered on trees and plants. Even today in parts of India the sacred groves exist and are worshipped.

When Chandra Gupta Maurya came to power around 300 BC, he realized the importance of the forests and appointed a high officer to look after the forests. He launched the concept of afforestation on a large scale. These rules continued even during the Gupta period.

During the Muslim invasions a large number of people had to flee from the attacks and take refuge in the forests. This was the beginning of a phase of migration to the forest. They cleared vast areas of forests to make way for settlements.

The Muslim invaders were all keen hunters and therefore had to have patches of forests where they could go hunting. This ensured that the trees in these areas were not felled, and the forest ecology was not tampered with.

During the early part of the British rule, trees were used for timber and forests were cut for paper. Large numbers of trees such as the sal, teak, and sandalwood were cut for export also. The history of modern Indian forestry was a process by which the British gradually appropriated forest resources for revenue generation. Trees could not be felled without prior permission and knowledge of the authority. This step was taken to ensure that they were the sole users of the forest trees.

But after some time, the British began to regulate and conserve. In 1800, a commissioner was appointed to look into the availability of teak in the Malabar forests. In 1806, the Madras government appointed Capt. Watson as the commissioner of forests for organizing the production of teak and other timber suitable for the building of ships.

In 1855, Lord Dalhousie framed regulations for conservation of forest in the entire country. Teak plantations were raised in the Malabar hills and acacia and eucalyptus in the Niligiri Hills.

In Bombay, the conservator of forest, Gibson, tried to introduce rules prohibiting shifting cultivation and plantation of teak forests. From 1865 to 1894, forest reserves were established to secure material for imperial needs. From the 18th century, scientific forest management systems were employed to regenerate and harvest the forest to make it sustainable. Between 1926 and 1947 afforestation was carried out on a large scale in the Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. In the early 1930s, people began showing interest in the conservation of wild life.

Around the same time the Indian rulers of the States also started conservation of habitats to help conserve the birds and mammals. Though all of them were hunters and between them and the British they cleaned at least 5000 tigers if not more. But still these areas of conservation helped save the species from extinction and formed most of the modern National Parks.

The new Forest Policy of 1952 recognized the protective functions of the forest and aimed at maintaining one-third of India's land area under forest. Certain activities were banned and grazing restricted. Much of the original British policy was kept in place, such as the classification of forest land into two broad types.

The next 50 years saw development and change in people's thinking regarding the forest. A constructive attitude was brought about through a number of five-year plans. Until 1976, the forest resource was seen as a source of earning money for the state and therefore little was spent in protecting it or looking after it.

Today India's forests are protected in National Parks like Corbett and Nagarhole or in Sanctuaries like Pakhui and Little Rann of Katch. The modern way of thinking has resulted in Biosphere Reserves and Biodiversity Hotspots and extensive research on them have resulted in rediscovery of new species of mammals like the Leaf Deer in Arunachal Pradesh or the Hook Nosed Frog in Western Ghats.

Supporting more than 14 percent of the wild fauna and a higher percentage of the wild flora of the world the forests of India is an intricate web of life with many surprises to explore. As we proceed to an era of advanced wildlife management and as the pressure on the forests all over the world increase the need of the hour is to realize the potential resource that the forests have both economically and from the natural point of view.

Safaris in the Parks

The game drive / jeep safaris at most of the famous Parks in Central India, Rajasthan , Karnataka and Eastern India are carried out in open jeeps. These vehicles have two kind of seating arrangements i.e. front facing and side facing:

Front facing seating – There are two separate seats in front, one for the driver and a passenger seat, both of which are adjustable. Behind these are two front facing fixed seats for two passengers. There is enough legroom and space to keep camera bags/field bags. The guests have good wildlife viewing access on all sides. First aid box and the map of the respective wildlife area are generally available in the vehicle.

Side facing vehicles - There are two separate seats in front, one for the driver and a passenger seat, both of which are adjustable. Behind this are two side facing seats for two passengers each. The middle space between the seats allows enough legroom and movement for the passengers for viewing the wildlife. The space below the seats can be used for putting field bags and camera bags. First aid box and the map of the respective wildlife area are generally available in the vehicle.

In certain parks and wildlife sanctuaries areas different vehicles like Toofan (covered), Mahindra etc. are used for safaris. Apart from this, there are boat safaris, caracal ride and Elephant safaris available in certain places. Few parks even organize jungle walks, bamboo rafting with local park guides.

Watch towers are also available in certain Parks where guest and view the surrounding wildlife of the forest. Some Parks have man pulled rickshaw ride, camel cart ride available for viewing wildlife.

The food is authentic, home-style Indian but on request they will prepare continental cuisine, and they utilise the space on the property well by setting up many different dining venues. It is evident that the emphasis is on the guest 'experience', exemplified in the manner in which they handle the safaris into the Tiger Reserve. Bhainsrorgarh is a fortified outpost of the kingdom of Mewar, 235 kilometres northeast of Udaipur and 50 kilometers south of Kota. It crowns a 200 ft rocky ridge overlooking the river Chambal. This fort was built by Rawat Lal. The ruler of Bhainsrorgarh was conferred with the title of Rawat by the Maharana of Mewar. The palace has been restored to its old world charm and the Bhainsrorgarh Fort Hotel will be an experience of a lifetime. Five large Suites overlooking the river are open to tourists. Paramount importance has been given to maintain the novelty of the architecture and decor by recreating the same aura in which Royalties of Bhainsrorgarh lived.

Brunton's Boatyard, Cochin
This is a wonderful heritage hotel located in the heart of Fort Cochin, but offering wonderful views across the cochin harbour. It is a very spacious and airy hotel, with traditional fans (pankhas) hanging from the ceilings. With only 26 rooms, it is an intimate place with wonderful service.

Chhatra Sagar, Nimaj
Situated just 2 hours from Jodhpur, this idyllic haven comprises 11 tents pitched on a dam, overlooking a lake teeming with birds. The Nimaj family are all personally involved in looking after guests and the tents are elegantly furnished. Each is pitched to ensure privacy and all face directly onto the lake. The food served here is some of the finest Rajasthani home cooking you will find and the charming family ensure you want for nothing. Due to its location, surrounded by farmland and small villages, a stay here allows you to experience rural Rajasthan in a way that few other properties allow you to.

Devigarh, Delwara
One of India's few 'boutique' hotels, Devi Garh will come as a surprise to anyone exploring Rajasthan. The concept of entirely modern interior design within the framework of a traditional palace is unique in Rajasthan and this is Devi Garh. The ingenious owners have given life back to what was a derelict hilltop palace and it is now a gloriously comfortable 'palace' hotel. The huge suites are spread around the building and are decorated predominantly in marble with individual colour themes to differentiate one from the other. Panoramic views, a large swimming pool, a small spa, superb cuisine and caring staff make this a must for anyone visiting Udaipur or the Aravalli Hills. Located 45 minutes from Udaipur.

Glenburn Tea Estate, Darjeeling
This little plantation retreat lies on the banks of the River Rungeet, high in the Himalayas and overlooked by the mighty Kanchenjunga. Home to generations of tea planters, it was originally established in 1860 and remains today a working tea estate, owned and run by the Prakash family. It is has recently been beautifully restored and it is now a wonderfully cosy and peaceful place to stay. With 4 rooms in the 'Burra Bungalow' and 2 rooms in the Glenburn Lodge down on the riverbank, it is the perfect place to stay for visiting Darjeeling (just an hour's drive away) or for those who just want to enjoy the magnificent views and stunning countryside. Wildlife abounds and there is plenty to do by way of a private tour of the tea estate or walking, trekking, fishing, picnics and bird-watching.

Malabar House, Cochin
One of Kerala's only 'boutique' hotels, the Malabar House is a fascinating and sophisticated hotel, situated on a peaceful green on Fort Cochin. An inspired mixture of local furniture and antiques, combined with contemporary designs and stunning, vibrant colour schemes, is all housed within a pretty, old Dutch colonial mansion which has been lovingly restored to its former glory. The cuisine and choice of wines is second to none, whilst the staff are friendly yet discreet. It is ideally situated for wandering out to see the Chinese fishing nets or for taking gentle strolls around the island which abounds with churches and interesting architecture.

Paradisa Plantation Retreat, Idukki, Kerala
Paradisa waits in the cool tea, coffee and spice growing highlands of the Western Ghats.  A working plantation, it has authentic Kerala-style wooden cottages set on a forested hillside and complete with the essential guest amenities. The peace and privacy provided by its seclusion, the magnificent wide-angle views of the mountains and the valley, mountain flora and birdlife, interesting local excursions and unhurried relaxation and the superb, fresh  fare from the kitchen make Paradise a wonderful interlude on a journey through Kerala.

Ramathra Fort, Ramathra, Rajasthan
The name Ramathra honours Lord Rama, who, it is believed, camped here while on his epic journey to Lanka. Today, Ramathra Fort belongs to Thakur Brijendra Raj Pal and his family who are descendents of the founder. The fort has a strong perimeter wall crowned with parapets. Its ramparts are wide and offer a spectacular view from the hilltop. Inside there is a multi-story palace, parts of which are being restored using traditional building techniques and local craftspeople. What distinguishes Ramathra Fort from many other heritage homes is its remoteness from the urbane and closeness to nature. Guest accommodations include 6 Suites and 6 Luxury Tents. You can enjoy lovely views and visit to the surrounding sights and villages.

Rawla Narlai, Narlai
This lovely little hotel lies, hidden away in a small village, deep in the heart of the Aravalli Hills. Surrounded by forested hills and rocky outcrops, it is reminiscent of a Rajasthan that few see today and is in one of the most beautiful parts of the state. Rawla Narlai is a delightful 17th century property which was once a favourite hunting lodge of the Jodhpur Royal Family. It is still owned by members of the Jodhpur family who are young and energetic and play an active part in the running of the hotel, to ensure it remains a real 'gem' of an experience.

Samode Palace, Samode
One of the first heritage palaces to open their tours to visitors, Samode Palace located in the Aravalli Hills just outside Jaipur boasts a magnificent example of Rajput-Mughal architecture. The owners, (the existing royal family of Samode) play a very active role in running the property. The rooms are truly beautifully appointed and have all the modern amenities you would expect. A lovely swimming pool and options to walk around the surrounding villages to experience a piece of rural Rajasthan.

Shahpura Bagh, Shahpura, Rajasthan
This wonderful, 120 year old garden estate was formerly the summer home of the rulers of Shahpura and comprises 2 residences. One residence, which formerly housed state guests such as British Regents and Maharajas, has been completely restored and houses 6 gorgeous, spacious, light, airy rooms. The main residence is where the family stay and is where you dine on colder nights. Set in 45 acres of garden and pasture and surrounded by lakes, it is a very special and ultimately peaceful little oasis, situated midway between Jaipur and Udaipur. With its idyllic and unspoilt rural setting, this is a place to come for at least a couple of nights as it provides a restful break in an otherwise hectic city-based itinerary. You can enjoy excursions to trace the history of the region through neighbouring forts or visit to the surrounding wetlands that are a birdwatcher's paradise, tempting even to the uninitiated.

I travel to India every year. First time was so impressive that I go to India over and over again. And these is not only because of India, but because of my trips are organized well. I never spend valuable time of my vacation for looking for hotel I feel nice and safe. I want to sleep between white clean sheets and have a cappuccino in the morning. I want to see places and hear professional guide about it all. I prefer to use a service of “Indiantryst”, the travel agency that I trust.
